Blindboy Boatclub, writer and podcaster, is a non-believer. He doesn't believe in any god or religion.
Yet, in this documentary he decides to explore the origins and evolution of early Irish Christianity, hermits, saints and monasteries, to try and find out who they were, what motivated them and what did they do?
The Land of Slave and Scholars lays bare the treasures of Ireland for all to see, from ancient stone circles to the Skellig Islands and back.
Press play on the image up top to watch the show aimed at Junior Cycle students.
As a writer, Blindboy was always interested in the early Irish writing tradition and he suspects that early Christianity, the golden age of learning and technical development, played.
He wants to know more about the saints – were they real at all and who were the people who lived then and created illuminated manuscripts some of whom lived in isolation for years on islands such as Skellig Michael off the coast of Kerry.
Blindboy, with input from a host of local experts and historians including Manchán Magan, Dr Daniel Curley, Dr Elizabeth Boyle and Dr Niamh Wycherley, interrogates our early medieval history.
