What is St. John's Eve and why do we celebrate it?

Known as Gaeilge as Oíche Fhéile Eoin or Oíche Sin Seáin, depending on where you're from, this isn't an Irish only festival but a European midsummer celebration.

The National Folklore Collection gives us an insight into the roots and customs of the occasion which still survives in parts of Mayo, Kerry and Donegal. Celebration in the form of bonfires, music, revelry and a sense of community have stood the test of time.
