Author Naoise Dolan spoke to Brendan O'Connor on RTÉ Radio One about her favourite books in English and in Irish and more recently, her foray into writing in Irish.
Dolan joined John Banville and Emer McLysaght bringing the listeners an eclectic list of book recommendations for the suitcase this summer. Amongst the books recommended by Naoise Dolan were Breandán Ó hEithir's Lig Sinn i gCathú. Naoise said she loved how 'unapologetic it is about being true to its context which is something which is very difficult to do as an English language writer'.
Naoise credits another writer with inspiring her to return to the Irish language and begin to write in Irish. She says the writer Yoko Tawada, a Japanese woman moved to Germany and began writing novels in German too. Dolan says that she loves that Tawada doesn't assign the non-native speaker a' subordinate position within the language.' This take on language learning and writing in another language gave Naoise the confidence to say 'my Irish mightn't be as natural as someone who grew up speaking it, but that doesn't mean I have nothing to add'.
