Sonia O'Sullivan broke the world record for the women's two mile event at Cork City Sports at the Mardyke Arena.
All eyes were on local athlete Sonia O'Sullivan who was going for a world record in the women's two mile event.
The Cobh athlete ran a storming race and shaved nine seconds off the previous best time setting a new record of 09:19:58.
Sonia O'Sullivan could not hide her surprise having broken the record to such a degree. She praised the crowd for their encouragement throughout the race.
Sonia O'Sullivan was joined by some of the biggest international names in athletics today. Algerian champion Noureddine Morceli won the men's 1500 metres in a time of 03:34:79. Susan Smith won the 400 metres hurdles but windy conditions meant she was outside Irish record time. In the men's 800 metres, James Nolan of UCD beat the Kenyans to come in second place.
