President Kennedy and his party are greeted by President de Valera and a host of Irish dignitaries.
The wait is over as President Kennedy arrives to much applause and fanfare at Dublin Airport, where he is greeted by Irish President Éamon de Valera and Taoiseach Seán Lemass. Commentator Michael O'Hehir describes President Kennedy as looking “remarkably fresh”. The president's party includes his sisters Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Jean Kennedy Smith and his sister-in-law Princess Lee Radziwill.
As President Kennedy inspects the guard of honour, the No. 1 army band plays the American national anthem and the 21-gun salute booms out in the distance. 84 of the 107 men in the guard of honour have served in the Congo. In March 1963 President Kennedy acknowledged Ireland's contribution in the Congo when he said that the men were serving in the interest of mankind. Of the 107 soldiers, eight are from Wexford, the ancestral home of President Kennedy and a place that will play an important part in this visit.
