A Lion in 2021, Van der Merwe started all three Tests against the Springboks, scoring five tries in a total of seven games on that South African tour.
Born on South Africa's Western Cape, the winger qualified for Scotland via residency in 2020, and is already the country’s record try-scorer, with 31 tries in 49 caps.
Van der Merwe joined Edinburgh in 2017 before departing for Worcester in 2021, although he returned to the URC side after Worcester folded in 2022.
