A woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s are recovering in hospital in Northern Ireland after the flat that they were living in at the Princess Avenue area of Cookstown, Co Tyrone, was set on fire.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland have launched an investigation, after it was reported that accelerant was poured through the letterbox of a flat in the area and set alight.
Group Commanderat at Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Danny Ard said that the alarm was raised just before 1am.
The woman was rescued from a window ledge using the assistance of a ladder, while firefighters entered the property to rescue the man.
The injuries sustained by both people were largely smoke inhalation, and they were treated at the scene by members of the ambulance service.
Mr Ard said that the fire was deliberate, but was not related to recent unrest such as rioting seen various areas of Northern Ireland.
Another fire at an outbuilding close to the property was also extinguished.
A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances and at this stage, the incident is being treated as deliberate ignition.
"Detectives are appealing for information and would ask anyone with any information that may be able to assist with their enquiries, to contact them".
