Sarah Webb: It has never been more important to help kids find books

Ahead of Ireland Reads Day this Saturday (22 February), Irish author Sarah Webb is encouraging parents to pick up a book and read to their child. And she advised parents not to allow technology to interfere with their kids' reading habits.

"Once children have a device, all kinds of things go, everything suffers, even sport," said award-winning children’s author Webb, whose new book, The Weather Girls, tells the story of young women on a mission for change in 1950s Dublin.

"It has never been more important to help them find books and as parents, we need to step up and make sure there are nice books around, including Irish books; it’s never too late.

"The key is in finding stories that they connect with, find things they want to read but don’t be sniffy about it. If you need book advice, ask a Librarian for help.

"There seems to be a lot of pushback against funny books and comic books but the number one thing is finding something that keeps them reading."

In her part-time job at Halfway Up The Stairs, a Wicklow children’s bookshop, the author often hears parents despair that their children read comics – but her advice is to let them be, because they are still reading.

Irish libraries, says Webb, are a key tool in fostering regular reading habits, offering audio books, the online library Borrowbox and membership without the risk of fines for late book returns.

Ms Webb, who runs writing clubs for teenagers, joins other ambassadors - including Marian Keyes, Dave Rudden and Oliver Callan – in backing Ireland Reads, the Libraries Ireland campaign for everyone in Ireland to 'get lost in a good book’ during February.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary, said that as Minister with responsibility for libraries, he is "delighted to support the Ireland Reads campaign".

He added: "Reading is more than just a hobby - it’s a chance to learn, to explore, and expand your horizons. Our libraries and booksellers, in communities across the country, have a wealth of books to bring you enjoyment and pleasure through reading.

"I would urge you to support them all as you ‘Get Lost in a Good Book’ on Ireland Reads Day."
